Good list!

I might add Weeds to the list, the first season anyway.

Lost was one of my favorites.

I'll expand more later on, but the Wire is the pinnacle of TV viewing for me. That show has never been, and probably never will be topped.

Simply amazing characters and story lines.

For me

1. 24. I still remember when I started watching the first season after I downloaded it. I believe it was already up to season 4 when I started watching it. Once I started, I was hooked and couldnt stop watching. Every season was solid for me.

2. Rescue Me. For those who have never seen this show, you dont know what you are missing. Denis Leary was simply amazing. Doesnt get the respect it should have.

3. The X-Files - the last couple seasons really got away from what the show was truly about and although I continued to watch, it didnt have the same shine for me.

When I am home I dont get to watch as much TV as I would like but when I am sailing (I am in the RCN) I get to watch more series. I find they help pass the time at sea so I focus on them more there.

There is a difference between what you think is the best versus what is your favorite.

24 is my favorite show but I think Mad Men is a better series. Actually, I would put Mad Men, The Wire, and Breaking Bad as "better" shows than 24. That's the beauty in coming up with a list of favorites- you don't have to justify your rankings.

Another one that I'll admit to: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, especially the first three seasons.

@Dobber: Have you watched all of 24? If not, stick in there throughout the end of season 5. Season 5 was probably the second best season of the series.
I did watch it all, I was going to stick the latter seasons in there at the end of the list, but just left it out.

Prison Break! Good one, completely forgot about that, I'll edit

Interesting suggestions of other shows, I'll be referring to this thread when I get caught up on my current ones (I'm a little behind on True Blood and Dexter).

Thank you Angus for inspiring this. And you're right about The Wire, too. I may have some GoT bias because I've read the books, but the series captures it well. And the politics and edginess are unmatched. Also, I think it's really the only series in which there is no "good guy" vs. "bad guy". It's just a bunch of good and bad characters that you like/dislike and find interesting - and as often as not, they suddenly die.

I updated my list to include Prison Break

As dramatic as Sutherland could be, I ate up 24 - both me and my girlfriend loved that show.

Some of my current favs:

The Good Wife - typical lawyer show, but great cast and solid story lines.

American Horror Story - not necessarily scary, but definitely creepy.

Fringe - nothing like X-Files anymore so nice to have something like it. Sotryline can be a bit tough to follow but is really rounding in to form in the last few episodes. I need my
Sci-Fi, even if it is a bit cheesy.

The Wire - Just a damn good, gritty and realistic show. Love it.

Spartacus - Pretty solid show. Like the way it's shot, unique in comparison to other shows.

Favorites:

Deadwood - nothing has ever touched this show for me. I thought the story lines were fantastic, the attention to detail was tremendous and the characters were all spot on in terms of seeming real (character development is the most important thing to me in movies/tv). I love the style of language they use and it's downright dirty and deadly - just the way I'm sure it was. I believe it's the only tv show I've ever watched over again, and that's been five times.

X-Files - can't go wrong, unless you hate sci-fi

I agree with you regarding Deadwood. It was an excellent show.

As others have mentioned, Band of Brothers is one of my all time favorites, one of the few series I have watched over and over. I didnt list it because I considered it more of a mini-series than a TV series.

I remember the one guy would forecast the future and everything fell into place... except the finale of Season 1. That episode had several flaws in the forecast. It was already as if the writers lost track of their week-to-week build-up. Season 2 was the biggest drop-off in a single series I've ever witnessed. My wife & I both went from love-to-hate in a matter of one half season. We forced ourselves through Season 2 (like bad vegetables) and then forced ourselves through the start of Season 3 before just looking at each other one night and saying "this is garbage".
I could very easily write this almost word for word for my wife and me as well. We LOVED season 1 of Heroes. It was our favorite part of the week. About 4 episodes or so into season 2, we were totally deflated and stopped watching cold turkey. Never finished season 2, never even knew season 3 existed. Unfortunate really.

Here's my best attempt at favorite shows.

1. The Wire
2a. Breaking Bad
2b. Game of Thrones
4. Homeland
5. Walking Dead
6. Sons of Anarchy
7. Dexter (last season totally stole my enthusiasm for this show)
8. Luther - just finished catching up on this show.. and love it.

*I have yet to watch The Sopranos. Have seen an episode or two, but that's it.
