I think Brendan Gaunce will get a 9-game stint if he looks half decent in camp. Obviously that won't fill in all the way to December, but that will likely cover some of the time. Possibly Jordan Schroeder gets a brief stint in the rest of the games until Kesler is back. I personally think he's got a better chance long term on the wing, but who knows.

Does anyone know of any record on the typical recovery arc for this type of injury and surgery? I know there are some injuries where a player typically takes at least a whole season to re-attain his previous production, whereas some procedures see production return (at least close) to normal after a brief recuperation.

In my league injured players tend to get heavily downgraded at the draft (eg I got Crosby in the late second round last year). I also believe I have an excellent chance of making the playoffs in my H2H league. If so, I really only would need Kesler to perform in March/April. Is that a reasonable expectation?

I could be wrong, but I do not believe this type of injury is one that, post-surgery, will cause a major downturn in effectiveness in a player. I think for this type of injury once it's fixed it's fixed and, as long as the player has been conditioning properly, it shouldn't impact his play. This is in comparison to say an abdominal tear, which takes a ton of time to heal and realy hurts the player's effectiveness going forward, especially if they rush back.

What did he have done exactly? I assume either labral/SLAP and/or cuff tear repair. Usually 6 weeks just in a sling to allow healing, then 6 weeks to regain ROM (shoulder gets very stiff), and then strengthening starts at 3 months. And thats just regular rehab, not for sports yet.

He's returning to full contact hockey. So I think it would potentially affect him early on.

So if I understand correctly you're saying that even at the 6 month mark the player undergoing torn labrum surgery will still not be 100%, basically? I understood that once 6 months are up for this kind of surgery that there are really no lasting effects.

Anyway, it seems you're the doctor (and I don't even play one on TV!)

It depends. Most people are good at 6 months, but not always. And it always depends on what's actually damaged in his shoulder joint. He could have a small tear, easy to fix. Or a big, degenerative tear which is hard to repair (i.e. no tissue left to put sutures in).

But shoulder's generally do recover faster than ACL's.

If you're in a keeper league, and can get him for cheap, I would still do it.

So Kesler also had wrist surgery (heard he had a scapholunate ligament tear) and return not until January now.

Here is another source on Kesler (Fantrax)...looks like January at the earliest.

Ryan Kesler (shoulder/wrist) will continue to be paid during the lockout while he recovers from shoulder and wrist surgery. Kesler must report to the Rogers Arena every morning by 8 to receive treatment on his injured shoulder and wrist and then skates with Canucks personnel looking on. It was thought that Kesler would be out until December after the shoulder surgery but with the subsequent wrist surgery in June, it appears that Kesler will not be ready until January at the earliest. "I'm still pretty banged up," Kesler said. "Can't shoot. Can't really even stickhandle yet. I think the timeline was December before the wrist. When the wrist came into effect, it really hindered the shoulder. I couldn't do much for eight weeks so that puts you back two months with the shoulder. Strength-wise, I'm pretty far behind." He will return to Cleveland, where he had the surgery, in early December for a re-evaluation.

I think he'll be ready to go for a December start, personally. He's taking his time which is great to see.
