If dyz get's the package it was well worth it. Not something I would do on a continual basis, but once was worth the cost.

Everybody wants to do Fed-Ex cuz they think the faster the better, however, you have to look at it from a customs agent perspective. If you list the contents of the package at $20-30 range, then why spend $40+ to ship it? That's a red flag, and you want to minimize those.

If I had to do it over again, I would ship the beer in a box of extra virgin olive oil and a box of imported pasta. On the customs sheet list the contents as is, that way the pasta hides the sound of the fluid and IF they here any sloshing they'll likely chalk it up to the olive oil. Plus, EVOO + Pasta is a not uncommon gift combo so nothing unusual there.

The EVOO would not go to waste in my house so I'm not really spending extra cash in that regard.

Yea at one or two bottles, beer trading definitely isn't feasible. However, as with anything in shipping, the larger quantity you send the cheaper it averages it.

But for a trial basis, one beer is a good start because minimal investment.

I'm pretty keen to hear how you guys like that Hopwired beer. Its all NZ ingredients. This is what the brewer says about it:

"1500 L
1.070
90+% Gladfield pale malt
22.5 kgs of Pacific Jade, 'Mystery hop X', Motueka and my favorite of all hops: Nelson Sauvin. 20 of those kgs added with less than 10 mins left of the boil (or in the hopback, or the fermentor)
Wyeast 1272
Fermentation should hopefully go to around 1.012 or lower.

What I am aiming for here is a true west coast style IPA with unique NZ ingredients, as far as I know the first of its kind to be put in a bottle??"

I find it really interesting that it is brewed with NZ hops only. Reason being, you cannot get hops like Simcoe, Amarillo, or Citra down here. They sell out in the first couple days. They shops that do have it are charging an arm and a leg for them, making it not worth it.

Might have to bust out this hop schedule on the next beer.

Not my recipe, but I think this is the one that I will try this weekend.

Just wanted to chime in and say keep up the good work everyone. I was at my local LCBO (Ontario's government controlled alcohol retail and distribution centre) this weekend and saw some Red Racer (Strong) IPA. I picked up a couple (I was pretty sure I saw it somewhere in this thread and thought I would give it a try) and was incredibly impressed.

The hopiness was nicely offset with the fruity undertones (pineapple?). It went nicely with the Thai food we had ordered in.

Cheers.

It's really difficult to reconcile his comments. I can't ever recall getting drunk on a beer I didn't really like. Maybe it's an Alberta thing...anybody else from Alberta have that happen to them?

Breakdown on the ones I had over the weekend...

Duvel Rustica: No better than Duvel. In fact, I'd rather have the Duvel. The Rustica was ok, I suppose, but it didn't offer anything its older brother didn't bring to the table

My Antonia: Very nice pilsner. The kinda pilsner labatts and all those trashy U.S. brews (Coors, Bud, Mich, Strohs et al) strive to be. After experiencing a My Antonia and reaffirmiming my faith in full flavored Pilsners. I also realized Coors is nothing more than water with a beer flavored boullion cube thrown in.

Namaste: Good for what it is - a Belgian-esque beer. But honestly, if I'm going that route it'll be Rare Vos or Duvel. Perhaps the Dogfish Head brand spoiled me with Theobroma and My Antonia, but if i want a Belgian, I'll buy a Belgian.

Hallelujah!!! Welcome to full citzenship in BeerGeekLand! Also the cruder, and much more accurate, description of Coors is Rocky Mountain Goat Piss.
