because he is a defenseman it is virtually impossible to get back what he is worth

its not just about getting elite back its about him being so far better than replacement value than other top players at other positions

to the op how many keepers btw

This is something I've been wrestling with as well. Ever since I started reading these boards I've read the 'buy low, sell high' mantra too many times to count. Isn't Karlsson the ultimate sell high? He won the Norris as a 22 year old which, as far as I can tell, hasn't been done since Bobby Orr won his first one in 1968. He isn't leaning on superstars like Ovechkin and Backstrom to score his points, he's doing it all himself. The last defenseman to score 78+ points was Lidstrom (80 pts) in 05-06, although Green has come close twice since. He has played 217 games since his first season in 08-09, only missing 13 games due to injury, so he's durable. I am hard pressed to find a negative thing about him at this point. For his first two years the knock against him was a truly awful +/- (which is the only reason I was able to get him in the first place), but last year he was +16.

The fact that there's nothing bad to say about him is both a good thing and a bad thing. It's a good thing for you, the owner, because you've got this great piece that everybody wants and they have almost no flaws to gravitate towards to make you doubt his value. It's a bad thing because of 'buy low, sell high.' Who wants to buy someone at the absolute height of the market, when the only way to go is down? It'd be much easier for the other GM to wait for Karlsson to stumble a bit so that he has a bit of leverage in talks.

It's incredibly frustrating and I've decided to just hold onto him and enjoy his ridiculous numbers. Trying to get another owner to realize that packaging him with a 90 point forward to land Malkin or Crosby just isn't worth it is exhausting. Likewise, trying to convince another GM that Karlsson is worth more than an 80 point forward is equally tiring.

A week ago I traded Karlsson, Alfy, Prospal for Enstrom and Tavares

Points-only, keeper league..

I don't think Karlsson will pull a Green, and I'm still unsure about it.. The boards suggested I make the trade though. So I went with it.

And that's exactly what I've decided, after much soul searching.

I would not shop Karlsson around, but I would listen to offers. People really underestimates the value of a 70pts defenceman. That's why it would be hard to get what he's worth. Enjoy the production he's giving you.

awesome replies guys...I'm glad someone noticed the irony of the buy low/sell high predicament that all Karlsson owners find themselves in.

good advice from everyone...but i think what's stuck with me is to wait for the offers to come to me (if they do) instead of me searching out a deal.

cheers

Probably the best option - I own him in 4 leagues and have never shopped him (got him at least 2 yrs ago in each). He isn't going to get 70+ every year but is IMO pretty much a guarantee for 55-60 at least, which is not common for a d-man.

Last season I traded my Karlsson/Datsyuk for Stamkos/Chara, for most people it seemed to be a nobrainer move. But I actually gave it a lot of thought. Had Green a couple of seasons ago and won a title with him on my roster (my 1st round pick that season). Elite numbers from D men such as Karlsson is so rare that if you havent had them on your team you cant really determine the value of such a player.

Well probably most of the posters here can, but not everyone who plays fantasy hockey is all nerdy about it like us.

The reasons I finally decided to go along with the trade were that its a goal heavy(Stamkos) multicat. (Chara) league. But I still miss Karlsson.
