Talking AHL GOALIE POWER RANKINGS: Updated 1/4

All of the AHL goalie analysis I've done over the summer has manifested itself in a new report. I'm not sure if I'll do this weekly, bi-monthly, or monthly yet, but it is definitely here to stay since I have a better pulse on AHL goaltending than I've ever had before.

AHL Goalie Power Rankings: Week 1 -- http://www.thegoalieguild.com/2012/1...nkings-week-1/

Just a personal look at each AHL tandem, ranked #1 to #30. With so many NHL players in the AHL this season, experience goes a really long way. But like anywhere you play, you also need the talent as well.

Feel free to chirp this ranking and enjoy the weekend! I'm excited to be covering a lot of NCAA (mostly WCHA) hockey this season. More and more goalies in college are landing pro gigs, and I expect that trend to continue.

Peace out!!

Thank you sir! You as well, especially the personal training stuff -- huge help for me right now since I'm actually doing some weight training for the first time in my life.

I am looking at different ways to approach these AHL rankings so if anyone has any feedback, let me know. I don't want to start doing it weekly and then have to change it up when the NHL comes back. So I'm thinking of twice a month. One week of games isn't really much of a sample size, anyways ... especially if many teams don't play their backups. So bi-monthly might make the most sense.

Lehner's looked amazing so far. This Leggio goalie for Rochester stood on his head tonight.

From what I've heard over the past 6-8 weeks, Lehner really matured in his approach both mentally and physically over the summer. He was already regarded as a future stud (Top-5 guy in my Top-150 Rankings) but if he adds "consistency" to his performances this season, he will be a insane force for many years to come.

Something about the Swedes and Finns you guys ... look at my Top-5 ... Markstrom, Lehner, Lack ... and they are legitimate Top-5 guys.

These trends need to play a role in how you draft and manage your farm-team goalies.

Draft bigger guys, 6-2 and over. Draft Swedes and Finns. Your odds are much better one of them pans out.

Sami Aittokallio had an unreal first game in the AHL. To come straight over from Finland and shut the door on the Oklahoma City Barons in your AHL debut says a lot about your ability to play big in pressure-filled situations. I have been trying to say to everyone how good he really is ... not just the skill but the fierce desire to stop the puck. He has the elements you want in a Finnish prospect.

But......it's only been 4-5 days into the season =P

I hate to peg somebody simply by their nationality & size... but I've been slowly buying into this theory for the last few years. I've decided to go a bit outside Scandinavia, but I have several teams drafted for the coming year invested in Varlamov (Russian, 6'-2") and Pavelec (Czech, 6'-3"). In my points-only keeper, I added Lindback (Swede, 6'-6") to my team of Fleury & Crawford. We count only the top 2G.

Anyways, really enjoying the AHL updates so far. They've been great in the absence of NHL games. (sending you some REP)

Here you go everyone:

http://www.thegoalieguild.com/reports/ahlrankings/

It's now structured like all of my other monthly reports...except this is every two weeks. Click above to download the first update of the season. Lake Erie and Springfield the biggest risers, while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Peoria are the biggest droppers.

Great stuff as always, Justin. Your stuff always plays a major role in how I view not just goaltending for fantasy purposes, but the position in general.

Cheers
