Taking an in-depth look at Tampa Bay forward Teddy Purcell Now that the season is underway and drafts are behind us, it's time to focus attention on the trade market and identifying opportunities to buy low or sell high. Knowing the perfect time to sell a player who is overvalued, or buy a player who is undervalued, will help you to improve your roster and continue your march to a fantasy league championship. Today, I present a great sell high option: Teddy Purcell.
Teddy Purcell’s value is probably as high now as it has ever been. He finished last season on a tear (38 points in 34 games post ASB) and starting this season, he has picked up right where he left off with nine points in seven games. Tampa Bay is leading the league in goals for and Teddy is 4th on the team in average power play ice time. Yahoo! Currently has him ranked as the 36th overall player in the league! Clearly Purcell’s stock is at an all time high but let’s look inside the numbers.
We already know that Purcell has shown an ability to put up points, but looking at the numbers there are a couple of concerning things with Purcell:
To get an idea of the impact that Purcell’s poor output in many categories has on his overall value, I ran his 2011-12 numbers through Fantasy Hockey Geek (for a Yahoo! Standard 12 team league counting G, A, +/-, SOG, PIM, PPP)
You can see above, that although Purcell was tied for 37th in league scoring last season, his overall value was calculated 169th. His lack of contributions in so many other categories really hurts his overall value. I think it’s quite possible that Purcell will finish 2013 at a pace that is higher than 65 points, but his peripheral stats are not drastically improving so his value is very unlikely to match his Yahoo! Ranking of 36. Now also consider this:
The above factors and previous season’s history would indicate that Purcell will not quite continue to produce at his current rate of 1.29 points per game. Furthermore his lack of contribution in other key categories further reduces his true value greatly, as shown by the FHG numbers. His perceived value is at an all time high because of his points are sexy and Tampa Bay is a scoring machine right now. What all this says to me is that it is time to sell high on this guy NOW. Here are a couple of RW that could be good potential targets if you are dangling Purcell:
Purcell is a great example of how to cash in on a sell-high to help win your league. To identify more opportunities like Purcell, sign up for Fantasy Hockey Geek today! Compare the actual value that FHG calculates with the rankings that are posted in Yahoo! and you can identify some great sell-high opportunities of your own. Recent Geeks of the Week:

... Hey guys, thanks for reading. Great questions @holdUP: That's a tough one, but I likely would make that move if I were you. You will be giving up some As and PPAs but I personally think that Jordan will be a better contributor to all of the other categories over the rest of this season (Purcell may have a better + too). In a Roto league that counts both SHG and SHA a guy like Staal could be incredibly valuable - as 2 or 3 extra SHPs could potentially move you 4 or 5 spots up in that category, which will more than offset the damage done by the assists you might lose by moving Purcell. 4 out of 9 cats in your league are for special teams, so somebody like Jordan who plays on BOTH special teams is a great own. I think it is a pretty fair deal, but I would personally prefer J Staal. @hockeymasters: A points only league is probably the format that Purcell is MOST valuable. I wouldn't move Teddy in a points only league for some of the names I previously mentioned (Backes, Brown etc). I would treat Purcell as a 75 point player and if you can get a better return than that, then I would move him. If not - then he is a solid keep for your team. If you could buy low on somebody like Kessel, then yes I would pull the trigger. As for Ovi, I personally don't think you can move him right now. His value is at an all time low and I sincerely doubt that you will get fair return. You are likely best to ride it out with Ovi and hope he figures it out again. As you mentioned, maybe you can flip him after he heats up (but you probably end up wanting to hold on to if he does!). For now though, the only way I would move Ovi is if I am getting a return worthy of a top 5 player in the league. It isn't likely that somebody will give you that at this point. |

points only Hi Terry, I'm in a keeper league with eight other guys. It's essentially a points-only league, one point rewarded for goals and assists. Of the 30 players you protect 12. Purcell was one of the guys I protected. Anyways, with the points being the way it is, do you think I should still consider trading Purcell? I'm not sure if there is a point. I think it may be worth considering if his point totals will decline soon. Any thoughts on Ovechkin? I'm considering moving him. I'm thinking about waiting a little to see if he starts producing more then making the move before his value drops. |

Purcell for J Staal? Rotisserie, 16 teams - G, A, +/-, PIM, PPG, PPA, SHG, SHA, GWG. If I can get jordan staal for purcell should I? I think I'm probably even dumb for asking, since Staal will contribute SHP for me... |
