Happy 4th of July to my American readers
Further to my Minnesota post below, Jonas Brodin will be in training camp this year and hopes to make the team. I think he has the skill set to make this team right away, and I think his offensive talent is underrated. A dark horse for the Calder Trophy and a future star. You can read Brodin's profile here on DobberProspects. You can get an even more in-depth profile on him in the Fantasy Prospects Report. Thanks to Sentium for the links.
Some tough news from out of Owen Sound. Phoenix prospect Brett MacLean suffered a cardiac emergency while playing hockey. He received CPR and was rushed to hospital. Later he was transported via air ambulance to a hospital in London. Our thoughts are with Brett and his family.
The thinking is that the UFA market is frozen in until Zach Parise or Ryan Suter sign. When teams miss out on those guys, then they will turn to the likes of Alexander Semin, Kristian Huselius, Matt Carle, Pavel Kubina, Andrei Kostitsyn, Eric Fehr, Ruslan Fedotenko, Kyle Wellwood, etc.
Signings of lesser players I would like to see, and if I was their agent I would try to make this happen and offer a rock-bottom price to get it done. I call this feature the “Best Fits for the Misfits”:
Peter Mueller to Pittsburgh
Al Montoya to Tampa Bay
Wojtek Wolski to the Islanders
Eric Fehr to Toronto
Cal O’Reilly to Columbus
MA Gragnani to Florida
What do you think?
I still think Parise goes to Minnesota. I don’t like the rumors that Ryan Suter will join him there… just doesn’t feel right. But it could happen – and the Wild will be a strong team if it does. Think about it – they add Parise, Suter and Granlund this year. They add Larsson, Coyle and Brodin next year.
Interesting – the Sabres have eight NHL defensemen who shoot left, not counting Brennan) and just one who shoots right – Tyler Myers. Again I have to wonder why they signed Christian Ehrhoff. Of all the teams who needed him last year, Buffalo ranked 30th in my books. There is a logjam on the point there and a move has to be made. They just signed Sulzer and Brayden McNabb is too new. Robyn Regehr is a key cog and they seem to really like Jordan Leopold. So that leaves Andrej Sekera, Mike Weber and Adam Pardy – and I don’t think teams would have any interest in the latter two.
Andrew Raycroft has signed to play in Italy next season, with a team that may join the KHL in the fall.
An interesting time lapse photography video on the Pittsburgh Civic Arena getting torn down:
Peter Mueller highlights (ignore the dumb music):
Why do dummies add stupid songs to good footage?
