Fantasy Impact: The Detroit Red Wings signed winger Mikael Samuelsson to a two-year deal worth $6 million.
The Red Wings get: an old friend back. Samuelsson tallied 40 points three times while playing for the Wings, winning one Stanley Cup. After four seasons there he went to Vancouver where he enjoyed his two best seasons (50 and 53 points). Last year he fought through lower and upper body injuries with Vancouver and Florida, stumbling to just 31 points.
Fantasy Players Impacted: Now 35, Samuelsson is fighting through injuries more often than not. He makes an ideal third liner on the Red Wings, as he can sub in on a scoring line when needed, yet won't be leaned on for offense.
There are several youngsters who play on the wing and will be fighting for ice time, including Gustav Nyquist and Swiss hopeful Damien Brunner. One or both of them will not make the opening roster. Here is how the depth chart looks:
Fantasy Players this helps, in order: 1. Samuelsson
Fantasy Players this hurts, in order: 1. Brunner 2. Nyquist 3. Todd Bertuzzi

... I'm beginning to wonder if it's the end of the road for Bertuzzi. Signs are starting to point in that direction, in my opinion. |

Nyquist Holland has said that Nyquist needs one more year in the minors, so I think signing Tootoo and Samuelsson confirms that ... |
