Fantasy Impact: The Colorado Avalanche have signed PA Parenteau to a four-year contract worth $16 million. The former AHL journeyman has finally cashed in...
The Avs get: a very underrated setup man who has always achieved with minimal opportunity. He has watched his opportunities increase over the last two years and now he's finally going to be given whatever he needs to succeed.
Fantasy Players Impacted: There are certainly better teams he could have signed with (Pittsburgh jumps to mind), but there are also worse teams he could have signed with (Columbus, Edmonton, Florida all jump to mind in terms of opportunity). There is no reason why he can't repeat 67 points in Colorado, but I wouldn't bet on it. I would bet on 60.
Essentially, he replaces Peter Mueller in the lineup. Surprised that Mueller was let go? Well, now you know what they did with their Mueller money - and this is a much safer investment as Parenteau stays healthy.
Steve Downie is going to kiss some of his PP time goodbye. I also think this may kick Jamie McGinn out of the top six, where he made an excellent impact this year. But on the plus side, this helps their centermen, specifically Paul Stastny and Matt Duchene.
PA Parenteau had 49 of his 67 points last year with Tavares on the ice. So 73% of his points playing 63% of his shifts with JT. Now it's time to do that with Matt Duchene (or so goes the thinking).
