Fantasy Impact: The Colorado Avalanche have signed PA Parenteau to a four-year contract worth $16 million. The former AHL journeyman has finally cashed in...
The Avs get: a very underrated setup man who has always achieved with minimal opportunity. He has watched his opportunities increase over the last two years and now he's finally going to be given whatever he needs to succeed.
Fantasy Players Impacted: There are certainly better teams he could have signed with (Pittsburgh jumps to mind), but there are also worse teams he could have signed with (Columbus, Edmonton, Florida all jump to mind in terms of opportunity). There is no reason why he can't repeat 67 points in Colorado, but I wouldn't bet on it. I would bet on 60.
Essentially, he replaces Peter Mueller in the lineup. Surprised that Mueller was let go? Well, now you know what they did with their Mueller money - and this is a much safer investment as Parenteau stays healthy.
Steve Downie is going to kiss some of his PP time goodbye. I also think this may kick Jamie McGinn out of the top six, where he made an excellent impact this year. But on the plus side, this helps their centermen, specifically Paul Stastny and Matt Duchene.
PA Parenteau had 49 of his 67 points last year with Tavares on the ice. So 73% of his points playing 63% of his shifts with JT. Now it's time to do that with Matt Duchene (or so goes the thinking).
Fantasy Players this helps, in order: 1. Duchene 2. Stastny
Fantasy Players this hurts, in order: 1. Downie 2. McGinn 3. Mark Olver

... I gotta agree to disagree Dobber. Looking back at Penguin pickups, Satan, Guerin, Sykora and Sullivan were notable failures. God knows they held back the production of Jordan Staal. And not only because he was the 3rd line centre. He just could not get his time on the PP. Besides Neal, has any forward gotten a boost from going to Pittsburgh? And IF Pittsburgh gave PAP $7 million/year, he still wouldn't be knocking off any of Crosby/Malkin/Neal off the top PP. |

... Isles's players this could help include Bailey, Okposo, Niederreiter and the newly acquired Brad Boyes as any of them could take Parenteau's spot on the 1st line. This could also help Frans Nielsen remain on the 1st power play unit, as his spot had been presumably taken by Visnovsky. If it hurts anyone, it could hurt Tavares and Moulson, but that is doubtful those two have been able to keep on trucking no matter who plays on their right side. |

... Agree with the general sentiment re: Pittsburgh. They do not believe in, and therefore rarely give a real shot to, players of PAP's type (see Cal O'reilly, Janne Pesonen, Chris Conner, Erik Christensen) |

... kunitz had 18 pp pts last season - and he wouldn't have that many if crosby played the whole season - crosby malkin neal on pp1 - no room for anyone else |

... In Pittsburgh he wouldn't need top PP time to hit 60+ points. Just look at guys like Chris Kunitz. My only concern with landing in Colorado, is who is actually a sniper on this team? David Jones? Stastny is more of a playmaker, I would say the same about Duchene and O'Reilly. Who does that leave to score the goals? |

... I don't see how Pittsburgh would be a better destination for PAP. He wouldn't get a sniff at the top PP. |
