Fantasy Impact: The Dallas Stars have signed veteran winger Ray Whitney to a two-year deal for $9 million.
Dallas gets: a winger who made the NHL's second All-Star Team, coming off the second best season of his 20-year career (77 points).
Fantasy Players Impacted: Whitney loses Radim Vrbata, and at 40 years of age it is silly to expect 77 points again. Dallas is a decent fit, but there are plenty of better ones and I would draft him with 60 points as my goal for him. With the loss of Mike Ribeiro, and the loss of PP time stemming from this signing - Michael Ryder almost certainly takes a hit.
However, at this point Cody Eakin has a shot as the second-line center (unless and until the Stars sign someone else). Whoever plays center on the second line receives a boost thanks to Whitney.
Fantasy Players this helps, in order: 1. Eakin (or whoever is second-line center) 2. Alex Goligoski
Fantasy Players this hurts, in order: 1. Ryder 2. Whitney

... This is a perfect fit for Whitney. A team that is quality but relies heavily on 1 or 2 lines. I don't expect 77 pts, but then again no team would allow him to get that again...but don't fool yourself you won't find any better fit than Dallas. This notion that Pens woulda been a better fit is BULL. There's too many cooks in the kitchen there. |
