Fantasy Impact: The Detroit Red Wings have signed goaltender Jonas Gustavsson to a two-year deal worth $1.5 million per season.
Detroit gets: a backup goalie. Gustavsson had high hopes, but injuries (including a heart problem) constantly disrupted his flow, and thus his development. If he can string together a run of games and maintain good health, he could surprise. Jimmy Howard, Detroit's starter, missed time with several injuries last season. If that happens again, Gustavsson will see a lot of starts. But any fantasy value depending on another player getting hurt is usually not good value at all.
Fantasy Players Impacted: This helps Gustavsson in that he stays in the NHL and he is in a system that will help him thrive when he does get into games.
Fantasy Players this helps, in order: 1. Gustavsson
Fantasy Players this hurts, in order: none

... Hope this kid can stay healthy for the Wings this season. He's a nice addition if he does. |
