Lindback USPRESSWIRE

(Great camera work to get the 6-7 Lindback to fit in a single frame)

Tampa Bay has solved their starting goalie problem, acquiring 6-7 Anders Lindback from the Nashville Predators. The full trade breaks down as follows:

Lindback, AHL forward Kyle Wilson, and a 7th round draft pick in exchange for two 2012 2nd round draft picks, a 2013 3rd round pick, and Sebastian Caron’s expiring contract.

The Lightning get:

A mammoth 25-year-old goaltender with upside. Lindback is going to be Tampa Bay’s starting goalie in front of Mathieu Garon, who has one year left on his deal. The Lightning obviously didn’t want to give up the assets to acquire Roberto Luongo or Jonathan Bernier. Lindback is untested but he has performed well in limited duty behind Pekka Rinne.

Three pretty good draft picks seems like a steep price to pay for a goaltender with less than 40 NHL appearances under his belt, but Tampa Bay didn’t lose any roster assets.

Lindback was originally drafted back in 2008 in the 7th round. He spent five seasons in the SEL before coming over to Nashville in 2010-11.  Lindback has a 16-13-2 record in two seasons with the Predators.

He looked good in 2010-11 filling in for an injured Rinne, but struggled last year with long stretches between appearances.

Wilson is an AHL player.

Read this for a terrific scouting report on Lindback.

The Predators get:

Some great draft picks (37th and 50th overall this year, originally Minnesota and Philadelphia picks, and a 3rd round pick next year) for a goaltender that wasn’t ever going to play more than 20 games in a season for them.

Caron isn’t under contract right now but the team will have his rights if they choose to sign him. Prospect Jeremy Smith may have the inside track at the backup spot behind Rinne, or the team may look to bring a veteran in.

Fantasy Players Impacted:

A huge boost to Lindback, obviously. Tampa is taking a huge risk going in with him as the starter next season, but things can’t get any worse than they were with Dwayne Roloson in 2011-12. If Lindback plays well, this helps every player on the Lightning (more confidence in a goaltender goes a long way to allowing players to relax on ice and play their roles more naturally).

The Lightning have a trio of young goalies in the pipeline for 2012-13 – Riku Helenius, Dustin Tokarski, and Jaroslav Janus. Who knows what happens with them right now. Janus and Tokarski backstopped the Admirals (AHL) to a Calder Cup, while Helenius is returning from Europe (and the second year of his two year deal is one-way). Janus is a restricted free agent this summer… maybe he is the odd man out?

For the Predators, this could be a huge opportunity for Jeremy Smith, but I would expect the team to at least get an idea of what the veteran goalie market looks like.

From Justin Goldman on Twitter:

“My first impression is that TB gave up a lot for a goalie that doesn't have a lot of NHL experience. Great opportunity for Anders though.”

From Kevin Woodley (NHL.com writer and In Goal Magazine writer) on Twitter:

“I like Lindback's size, mentality + game, so don't mind price Tampa paid, but no guarantee he's ready for 50+ games as No.1.”

Mike Gillis won’t be happy, as this takes away one of only a few likely landing spots for Luongo.

Fantasy Players this helps:

1. Lindback

2. Smith

Fantasy Players this hurts:

1. Riku Helenius

2. Dustin Tokarski

2. Jaroslav Janus

The price for Lindback Lightning had picks up the ying-yang - they got a starter quality goalie for picks and still have 2 1sts and 2 2nds in the draft, if I have it correct. Yzerman smells cagey - who really saw Lindback as a Lightning?
