Fantasy Impact: The St. Louis Blues have dealt their captain, defenseman Eric Brewer, to the Lightning in exchange for a draft pick and a prospect.
The Lighting get: A steady top-four defenseman who is regarded by his teammates as a great leader.
The Blues get: A 2011 3rd round draft pick and prospect Brock Beukeboom. An underwhelming return, even for an impending free agent. Beukeboom is a swift-skating defenseman who needs to work on his shot and decision-making. His play has regressed after a solid 2009-10 season.
Fantasy Players Impacted: Brewer was not acquired by Tampa Bay for his offense, but he has value in deeper leagues. His leadership and steady defensive play will be a huge boost to a team needing both as the playoffs approach. Brewer may not directly impact anyone on Tampa Bay, but he will free up other defensemen to play roles that they are better suited for. This bumps Randy Jones from the Tampa Bay lineup. The power play minutes will still go to Marc-Andre Bergeron (when he plays) and Pavel Kubina. Brewer could steal a few from Victor Hedman and Brett Clark, though.
Fantasy Players this helps, in order: 1. Brewer 2. Ian Cole 3. Nikita Nikitin 4. Dwayne Roloson
Fantasy Players this hurts, in order: 1. Jaro Halak/Ty Conklin

Backes Pretty much innevitable that Backes gets named Captain for next season. You've got to figure this move eventually hurts his PIM output much as it has for so many other PIM turned Captain guys. |
