COMPLETELY REWRITTEN due to all the early deals - In this six-part series, we’ll take a team-by-team look at the trade deadline. Buyers? Sellers? Who’s available? How can you prepare your fantasy roster for the upcoming address changes for some of these guys? It’s all here, and we’ll start it off with the Atlantic Division. Cap numbers courtesy of CapGeek.com
Philadelphia Buyers or sellers: Buyers
Cap Situation: Very tight. They could only add a player making the NHL minimum. Salary would need to be moved.
Pending Free Agents: UFA’s – Nik Zherdev, Ville Leino, Sean O’Donnell, Brian Boucher RFA’s – Dan Carcillo, Andreas Nodl, Darroll Powe, Stefan Legein, Dan Syvret
Needs:
Already done: The Flyers acquired Kris Versteeg for draft picks. That's a hardworking, energetic, clutch forward that they can certainly use.
The latest, from Spector’s Hockey:
Fantasy squad preparation:
Pittsburgh Buyers or sellers: Buyers
Cap Situation: All of these expensive injuries have given them a lot of extra extended space thanks to the long-term IR. They can add an $6 million player if they so choose, which is something that they’ve never had at recent deadlines. Thank you Mike Comrie, Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal.
Pending Free Agents: UFA’s – Pascal Dupuis, Max Talbot, Mike Rupp, Eric Godard, Arron Asham, Craig Adams, Chris Conner, Mike Comrie, Brett Sterling, Ryan Craig RFA’s – Tyler Kennedy, Dustin Jeffrey, Tim Wallace, Brad Thiessen, Nick Johnson
Needs:
The latest, from Spector’s Hockey: The Malkin injury has really sparked the trade talk in Pittsburgh, after having virtual silence prior to that...
Fantasy squad preparation:
N.Y. Rangers Buyers or sellers: Buyers
Cap Situation: They can squeeze in another two salaries at $4 million each, if need be. A Brad Richards at $7.8 could now fit thanks to the Chris Drury injury.
Pending Free Agents: UFA’s – Alex Frolov, Vaclav Prospal, Ruslan Fedotenko, Steve Eminger, Todd White RFA’s – Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, Brian Boyle, Matt Gilroy, Mike Sauer, Tim Kennedy
Needs:
The latest, from Spector’s Hockey:
Fantasy squad preparation:
N.Y. Islanders Buyers or sellers: Sellers – and I do believe that the rebuild ends after this season. Crazy, I know, but wait and see. Save the ridicule for next December when I’m clearly wrong. Or, conversely, the pats on the back when I’m clearly right.
Cap Situation: Uh, they better be careful about the cap floor, not the ceiling.
Pending Free Agents: UFA’s – Doug Weight, Zenon Konopka, Trevor Gillies, Radek Martinek, Nathan Lawson, Andy Hilbert, Evgeni Nabokov RFA’s – Josh Bailey, Kyle Okposo, Michael Grabner, Rob Schremp, Blake Comeau, Jeremy Colliton, Ty Wishart, Bruno Gervais, Dylan Reese, Jack Hillen, Al Montoya, Michael Haley,
Needs:
The latest, from Spector’s Hockey: 1. Radek Martinek is cropping up in a lot of rumors.
Fantasy squad preparation:
New Jersey Buyers or sellers: Sellers – It wasn’t supposed to be this way, but...here we are.
Cap Situation: The Devils have enough cap space to re-sign Zach Parise. They would just unable to sign anyone else. More cap room for next season needs be freed up. The fire sale has already begun with Jamie Langenbrunner going to Dallas.
Pending Free Agents: UFA’s – Jason Arnott, Adam Mair, Andy Greene, Johan Hedberg. Not enough to save them from cap hell next summer. Something has to give. RFA’s – Zach Parise. No more need be said, but I’ll mention the others anyway – Vladimir Zharkov, Tim Sestito, Matt Corrente, Anssi Salmela, Matt Taormina, Mark Fraser, Alexander Vasyunov, Ty Eckford, Jeff Frazee, Tim Sestito

... MichalSK, I am wondering how many rangers games you have watched this year ? I agree that Torts system is producing a large number of blocked shots but I am afraid I don't agree with great goaltending. Don't get me wrong, Henrik has been a top 5 goalie in the NHL but recently Lundqvist has been at best mortal and worst he gives up a softie a night which is why NY is floundering right now. In 3 of his last 5 games his save percentage is under .900 with a .750 against los diablos on Feb 3rd. I maintain that NY does not need another dman, especially if it costs younger players. This rangers fan is completely satisfied with the team and knows that next year they will be better. Girardi is the old man at 27 which seems like a winning formula to me. Its teams like Montreal with a 36 year old and a 37 year old who have issues on the backline and need an upgrade, not NYR If the panthers want to dump can opener mccabe on NY for something NY doesn't need going forward then fine, otherwise find another dance partner Florida. THN got it wrong this year. Lets hope they stop drinking the ranger hating kool aid going into 2011-12 |

... Paul - there is one thing you should consider as well - those GA numbers are not just the product of good job done by rearguards, but also the product of system Torts is using and terrific goal tending by Lundqvist. But i am with you anyway and both, Anisimov and Stepan, are still rookies with lots of upside. |

... Michael SK it will boil down to the cost to acquire the "asset". If its a salary dump guy that NY can squeeze under the cap great, although I maintain that cutting back on the minutes played of guys who are still developing is not a winning formula. If NYR want more development than they can bring in an experienced coach to teach but if you watch any ranger games this year you will see that the guys back there do not need any more tutoring. They are already here. NY is 8th in the league in GA and the youngest too. A winning formula yes ? Tell me again how bringing in some retread is going to "help" ? NY needs offense, which in Dobber's defense he did say but they DO NOT repeat DO NOT need any more defenseman. The question remains AT WHAT COST ? Kundrachek in the AHL is also a player, not to mention last years top pick in Mcilrath so NY will be dealing from strength on the backline and with Henke in nets over the next few seasons NY will be heard from come playoff time. and THN will have to show some ranger love because the rebuild is almost complete and ranger fans have waited for it. Let Montreal and NJ spend big dollars on 30 something dmen while Dan Girardi is the greybeard for NY at 26 years old. |

Great article, thanks Dobber Paul - interesting opinion, but imagine how nicely could the youngsters develop having chance to play with experienced guys - think of influence Brad Richards has had on Loui Eriksson, or Sean O'Donnell on Doughty, Johnson, Quincey in LA... |

... Awesome article Dobber. Can't wait for the rest of them. My only issue is that there is only one Sunday every 7 days so we have to wait another 5 weeks. LOL Out of curiosity, because you brought it up, do you happen to know the penalty for being under the cap floor since NYI seems to be in danger? |

... good stuff. as a die hard ranger fan I can tell you that NY should have no interest in renting players at the deadline. The team has the youngest blueline in the NHL and is in the top half in defensive play (better than top half). How does it benefit the team to bring in some other teams retread ? That was yesterdays Rangers not the current ones. Even with a rental guy they are not even close to being in the same class as Philly or Pittsburgh or Boston so why try ? Stick to the plan which is reaping great results, reinforce the team first principle and they will sink or swim together. Anyone who has watched NYR play this year can tell you that the team competes on just about every game. They are entertaining to watch, don't back down to anyone and hit hit hit the opposition. They are only getting better. Trading for some has been rental guy not only doesn't meet with the current teams plan but could hurt it by trading off assets they can use next year and the year after that. So I disagree with your Rangers piece, but thats fine we all have an opinion. I value yours which is why I am posting that I think you are wrong on my team. If NY wanted an expensive overpaid veteran they would have kept Michal Rozsival. The play of Michael Sauer and Matt Gilroy has really improved over the past month or two. Steve Eminger has allowed NY to give Del Zotto a wake up call and learn to continue how to play defense in the NHL and he admitted to not playing up to snuff in a recent interview. This team is going in the right direction. Young, talented and physical team play which will make them BETTER next year (THN you are on notice to get the call right one of these years) trading for rental guys is a mistake. Let other teams make those kinds of deals. NY should be selling Prospal, Eminger, and even Chris Drury if they can find a taker |

... I agree, great piece. Was actually thinking of pitching something like this when you were asking for writers, but wasn't sure how to make it as practical and fantasy-relevant as I thought it should be. This is a great lay out for the information - logically yet simply organized and easy to use. One thing I would add: for seller teams, list the players next in line for a 'promotion' - players who'll see higher offensive minutes and prospects who'll finish the season with the big club - once slots become available after deadline day (the assumption is whoever is moved is moved for pick/prospect). For example, Parenteau leads team forwards in PP time. If moved, who gets a bump in PP time (Grabner?) and who gets the vacated roster spot (Joensuu?). A comment on PIT - I wouldn't expect them to make a big splash, i.e., bring in a major player a-la Hossa a few years ago because they just don't have the depth of assets they had then. Who can they move? Projects like Hanovski or Kuenhackl or even Bennett (1st rounder, but still a project - producing, but not setting the world on fire, at U of Denver this year) won't ket them too far with other teams, nor would promising future serviceable shutdown Ds like Bortuzzo or Sneep. Which pretty much leaves Jeffrey, Tangradi, Despres, and their upcoming 1st. And this depth is growing pretty shallow, too shallow to keep blowing on rentals. Plus they have more than one need, so they are more likely to spread their assets. So I can't see them acquiring Richards, Penner, Hemsky, or Versteeg - all of these players would interest other teams enough to outbid the Pens. More likely they go for players who'd be really cheap, like Arnott or Kovalev, (or Huselius if they think they can fit him under the cap next year). I think they can get Arnott or Kovalev (or both) without moving a major pick or prospect. |

zherdev Great analysis! Can't wait for the rest of the series! Any ideas on who would be interested in Zherdev? Pit? I could definitely see him being moved with all of philly's depth. |
