Tim Kennedy

Fantasy Impact: The New York Rangers have signed free agent forward Tim Kennedy to a one-year, $550,000 contract.

The Rangers get: an unproven, but skilled winger who has the potential to be a solid second liner. He was just starting to show his upside with the Sabres of the course of the last 20 regular season and playoff games and was probably on the verge of a 45-point season had he remained there. Where he fits in on the Rangers is not as clear, but if Sean Avery and Ryan Callahan can lead a solid third-line energy unit, then there would be room in the top six.

Fantasy Players Impacted: Mats Zucarello-Aasen went from being a decent dark horse to probably not making the team. It's also another body in the way of Erik Christensen. As far as Kennedy goes, there are probably 20 or 25 teams that could have given him a real shot on the second line. His value went sideways at best.

Fantasy Players this helps, in order:

NONE

Fantasy Players this hurts, in order:

1. Mats Zucarello-Aasen

2. Erik Christensen

... minor point but I reckon this signing kills Christensen's chances

MZA is facing a major challenge as well, but its a tall order to come across the pond and make the team on a scoring line as a "rookie" despite his skill level. While he might find himself in the AHL at first I would expect a trade to come through at some point down the line.

There is a distinct logjam on the bottom six as well

Both Boyle and Gilroy took combat and boxing classes this offseason (despite being irrelevant fantasy-wise) so assuming Avery and Callahan anchor the 3rd line with Boyle Prust and boogaard on the 4th... thats more sandpaper than NY has had in years.

MZA owners weep What a waste for that kid to sign there.
I hoped he would sign somewhere in Canada because there are openings on every team.

Oh well.
