Fantasy Impact: The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed Paul Martin to a five-year deal worth $25 million.
The Pens get: an underrated PP quarterback. Martin was having a huge second half in 2008-09 and was unable to build on that in 2010-11 thanks to a terrible wrist injury. He could be coming off a 55-point season, but we'll never know thanks to that injury. Now, in Pittsburgh, they get him just in time - at 29, he's a year past when a typical d-man breaks out. But we know why he's a year late...
Fantasy Players Impacted: This is devestating to Kris Letang and Alex Goligoski owners. They just had what looked to be a nice break with the Zbynek Michalek signing, but the Pens managed to find more in their budget for Martin. He'll eat both of their PP ice time - and coach Dan Bylsma will play the hot hand on the top PP.
Fantasy Players this helps, in order: 1. Paul Martin 2. Evgen Malkin 3. Sidney Crosby
Fantasy Players this hurts, in order: 1. Kris Letang 2. Alex Goligoski

... underrated PP quarterback? I totally disagree. I tend to agree with most of your anysis but not this one by a long shot. Most overrated D for the cap he's bringing. The guy is all hype and he's never had over 37 in a year. Don't care about his pace last year, he does not bring it, and the Pens will soley miss Gonchar as their record speaks w/o him. Martin does not bring anymore than Letang or Goli could of, its just a HUGE off. loss for the Pens and even though they signed a couple 3-4 guys for 5 mill, they lost out on the stud. Bad move. |

... I heard a comment (can't remember who said it) on the chat earlier that the predicted top 4 would be Letang-Martin, Goli-Michalek. I'm just a fan and could certainly be wrong, but Orpik is top 4 and not Goli. Goli is not refined enough defensively yet. And he's not big enough to compensate for that with strength. He'll get the top PP minutes, but he's 3rd pairing even strength. Plus, I don't think Bylsma would put 2 more offensively minded blueliners on the same pairing. My guess is Letang-Michalek, Martin-Orpik. Or Martin-Michalek, Letang-Orpik. Just the opinion of a non-professional! |
