Fantasy Analysis: Toronto sends Lee Stempniak to Phoenix for a fourth and seventh round draft pick along with Matt Jones.
The Leafs get: two picks and a depth d-man. Great return for this player. The 'Yotes get: a third-liner who is often miscast as a second liner. Stempniak brings them the depth that they need. Fantasy Players Impacted: Another forward gone in Leafland and yet again this helps the kids. Luca Caputi, Viktor Stalberg, Tyler Bozak and Christian Hanson will all be leaned on a whole lot more down the stretch.
The move pushes players on the cusp of a top six spot in Phoenix down the depth chart. Examples include Petr Prucha, Taylor Pyatt and Lauri Korpikoski. None of them were huge fantasy factors anyway. Players this deal helps, in order: 1. Luca Caputi 2. Viktor Stalberg 3. Other youngsters (negligible) Players this deal hurts, in order: 1. Petr Prucha 2. Taylor Pyatt 3. Other third liners (negligible)

Burke's on a mission Burke's really shaking the apple tree. Stempniak for a couple picks and a prospect. Awesome. Stempniak's dime a dozen, as far as top 6 forwards are concerned. UFA status at the end of the season makes this a gross theft. The only downside is the short term extension of responsibility to the young forwards in Toronto. I'm sure Burke will fix that this coming summer. Phoenix made a short term minor, minor upgrade, at the expense of their long term fabric. |
