This is simply pulling defensemen out of the regular 'Rankings' list and adding a few more at the bottom. Ratings are a reflection of a player's trade value in 'rollover' fantasy hockey pools. They reflect a players predicted points, historical points, injury risk, team "reputation/potential powerhouse" value, powerplay time, and long-term potential.  Basically, if you are in a keeper league, this is my opinion based on my statistical model of a player's 'trade value'.  Naturally, individual trades would depend on the direction you are taking with your team at the present.

Isle - Faulk's upside lies in his two-way game. This is points. Chara's 50-point days are done, I think. So his upside is limited (not looking at PIM)

ipguy - remember Ovechkin, and don't discount the hype - they hype these superstars for a reason. Doughty has upside, Kings for now are just defensive

hockey - Gudbranson has no offensive upside

Why is Doughty still #10? Do you know something about him that we don't? He underperforms constantly and is on the cusp of losing the #1 offensive d-man job to Voynov in LA.

So, why so high?

I'm glad Dillon is now on the rankings. If points weren't so heavily weighted this guy would be Calder material without a doubt. The game against the Oils where he brokeaway short handed and got robbed by a sprawling Duby really showed his awesome speed for such a big guy. Oh he also had 11 hits the other night, like holy **** and he fights! I would trade for him right now because he'll be a top 20 guy if he keeps this up.

Chara and Faulk should each be about 30-35 places higher. Chara ought to at least be higher than Kubina and Rundblad! And Faulk ought to at least be higher than McBain, his own teammate! All one needs to do is watch about one period of a Canes game to see that Faulk is better than McBain in every facet.

Pavel Kubina, really?!?!?!?
How is Pavel Kubina still ranked as 45th best keeper D-man in February 2013? The guy is out of job currently and is already 35 years old. Playing in his homeland in Czech. Last time he put over 30 points was 3 years ago.

That's pretty big oversight. Kubina doesn't belong in this list anymore.

#28 with a 36 ranking?
He should have a ranking with twice your value!
I personally would keep him before Doughty and all followers.
He has had 50+ points in 3 of the last 5 seasons.
I am trying to figure out, the criteria (categories) that knock him down.
At age 35 I will keep him for at least another 3 years... And win my pool!

Faulk - I like him, but don't think he'll ever be a 50-point dman. He's also on a terrible team. The difference between he and a Top 70 guy is miniscule, I consider them all about equal (anything within 5 rating points is 'equal' to me). But yeah, I'm not happy with my dman rankings once we slip out of the Top 40 or so. I'm not sure how to fix that without revamping the entire formula and all the rankings. It's for leagues that don't differentiate by position, so a Faulk wouldn't even be considered unless 450 players are already owned.

Hee hee hee - couldn't resist that title. But seriously Dobber - no love here, but you've got him in the midseason guide as scoring 24 points in the 2nd half (which I think might be a bit high, but just a bit). In any case I see a big chunk of guys in your top 100 that won't do that and/or that aren't already playing 23 minutes a night as a 19-year old. Faulk it, you should add him!

K. Yandle, Pho

I'm thinking Yandle and Karlsson. But Enstrom is an auto 50+.

Dobber, if I were to use your d-man ranking to decide now which defencemen I should keep next year (I get to keep 3 of the six and I get a point for a goal and a point for an assist) I would keep Yandle, Doughty and Carlson (Wsh) and I would drop Shattenkirk, Dennis Wideman and James McBain. Is that what you think I be prepared to do?

Ben - playoffs, roll back Edler by nine points to get non-playoff ranking. This last month was also done pre-injury don't forget, you posted your comment after the injury, but my rankings went up prior to the injury.
Carcillo - that was a mistake I just caught today, thanks
Trevor - Gustafsson is all upside, and not so much "certainty". So on one hand his value is way up and on the other it gets dragged way down.
Kevin - Corvo should have been adjusted better last month. That oversight was caught this month and fixed.

Edler vs Pitkanen/Franson
Dobber, why is Edler almost twice Pitkanen's value, but in the midseason guide you have Pitkanen with only 2 points less 3YP, and a 10 pt. higher upside? Not disputing relative order, but I don't understand the magnitude of the difference.

Same with Franson, who has a higher 3YP and Upside than Edler. Why is Edler so much higher? Playoff value alone?

Itemized Summations
Dobber - I am able to follow your thought process for your rankings... but think it would be clearer if you created two columns of rankings: Current Year Value (CYV) + Future Year Value (FYV). Assuming a 50%/50% value split of the two, I could understand Buff having a CYV=60 + FYV=36. I could understand Mike Green having a CYV=40 and a FYV=56. 96 & 96. Sure, no problem.
.
But it does create a lot of confusion because some fantasy geeks associate value with just this year, some with future years, and some with a mix. Teams that are rebuilding need a value that is for next year & beyond. There is no way that I would rank Buff's FYV above Green/Doughty/Keith/Letang. This is definitely worth clarifying & differentiating, IMO.

Thoughts for next time
Dobber: A few inputs for the next list....

Keith - Not as much dept in Chi, will he drop a bit in output
Markov - injury included, don't know when he will be back
Kaberle - Does the Wilson controversy have an impact on how is played or how he plays?
Goligoski - Expect Letang to beat him out based on Angus's write up?
Gonchar - doesn't seem to get reduced enough for his age and injuries
Johnson - More STL will be stepping up for scoring, does it impact him
Martin - Too high given Letang's PP QB role
Enstom - how bad does he get hurt by the youth movement and having to cover D more

Always like your output, great to mull the reasons while looking at the stats...

Is it just me or is Jay Bouwmeester the most overrated (fantasy) defenceman around?
I've held this guy for 4 years now and I cringe every time I look at the box scores!
How is he a top 10 Fantasy D???

is this list only for this season? Why is Andrei Markov ranked 34? Behind Visnovsky? Are you kidding? If this is just for this year, then fine, I buy that with the injury, but if this is a list of the top defenseman to own in a keeper, he should be much higher....you have Scott Niedermayer at 22 for crying out loud....just looking for justification.

Im glad you hyped up Goligoski so much, really made me go out and trade for a draft pick so i could scoop him up in my keeper draft, his start has been money, and now he is the #2 ranked dman, love it!

You commented on October 30, when the list was 29 days old. In that time, we had no idea how Quincey would do.

Does Dobber have a hate on for Sheldon Souray?
I really don't understand how Souray end's up at the 40th best fantasy D-man. Is the likes of Jovanovski, McCabe, Zidlicky, and Pitkanen really a better fantasy option? I dont think so.

I'd probably take all of those guys over souray. in a points leauge (as the rankings are based on), souray isn't really that valuable; especially considering the fact that he's played what... 2 full NHL seasons?

Obviously if your league counts goals, he gets a boost in value, but the above ratings don't use that breakdown... strictly points, souray is and injury prone, 40-50 point guy. All those guys you mentioned are at least as good, and most of them are younger or more durable (arguments could possibly be made against this). Hence the higher rating.

Looks like positions finally caught up to Byfuglien. Yahoo now has him as a RW.

Weber?
I thought Coburn would blow up last season because he was basically loaded with ice time but he didn't. That when it was just him and Timmonen. Now that Pronger's in the picture, I dunno. I think he's still a good grab for the future.

Why is Weber ranked so low?

Coburn over Doughty
Would anyone take Coburn over doughty? What can be expected for Coburn next season as someone was forced to drop him in our league? Projections anyone?
