Tyler Myers is a stud defenseman, but seven years at a cap hit north of $5 million is a huge investment. Buffalo has some long contracts.... Look back seven years ago. Things can change a lot.

Zac Dalpe - snagged him third overall in my dispersal draft last week. Why do I like him? He is a gamer. Big, fast, strong, skilled, good shot. He projects as a great second line center and should fill the role as early as this season. Carolina is set for a long time up the middle with Staal-Dalpe-Sutter.

Thanks to Dobber for covering while I was in Las Vegas – what a trip!

David Savard became Columbus’ best defensive prospect last season, and he could be one of their best defensemen by the time 2011-12 is over. He had a standout prospect tourney and will have to have a really poor training camp in order to get cut from the main roster. He’s big, mobile, and poised. Lots of fantasy upside.

I’ve said this on Twitter a bunch – I am really excited to see Cody Hodgson this year. His first 100% healthy summer in three years, and he trained like an animal (I know, all players are “in the best shape of their lives”, but Hodgson has really been slowed with his previous back issues).

The Top 100 Roto edition for September is awesome – Gates answered the requests for peripheral statistics to be added in.

A pair of matching $5 million, two-year deals for Brad Marchand and Zach Bogosian. The term gives both players a bit of security, but not enough to get too comfortable. Marchand doesn’t strike me as the type of guy to rest on his laurels, but this ensures he doesn’t.

Kyle Turris wants out of Phoenix. The holdout isn’t the best way of going about it, but I don’t think he cares. He has zero leverage – the last time a player held out with such little leverage… Peter Schaefer with the Canucks?

I didn’t watch any of the prospect games besides the Canucks – two prospects that really impressed me – defenseman Adam Polasek (smooth skater, decent offensive upside) and power winger Darren Archibald, who is big, strong, and very skilled. Great shot at becoming an impact NHL forward (impressive considering he wasn’t even drafted).

From Jewels from the Crown:

Drew Doughty and the Kings remained at an impasse Wednesday, but that can change with one phone call. Sources told ESPN.com that the Kings won’t pay Doughty more than the $6.8 million Anze Kopitar makes on average per season. Further, Bob McKenzie of TSN reported late Tuesday night that the Kings won’t do a deal for less than seven years.

Great news for Isles owners – a surprise Tavares extension. Six years, $5.5 million. The second contract was dead a few years ago, and these big signings to (relatively) unproven players prove it more and more.

Ryan Murphy and Justin Faulk both had great prospect tourneys. Too bad they have so much depth in front of them – McBain, Kaberle, Pitkanen…. Great longer term prospects though.

One of the more interesting fantasy-relevant training camp battles coming up – Ottawa’s second line center position. Both Zibanejad and Da Costa had stellar prospect tourneys, and Peter Regin is in the mix as well. Da Costa has played North American hockey in the NCAA, but Zibanejad hasn’t been one to shy away from contact. Could both make the team?

I am super excited that Chris Nichols has hopped on board. If any of you aren’t familiar with him – he was the one real resource I read on a consistent basis for fantasy thoughts besides this site.

Time to plug the Fantasy pool manager – Hockey Knight. They are opening their site as a BETA for business as they add more features. Become a KEY part of this by adding your pool with them! Then get your say and help mold what they do. The vision – create the ultimate keeper-league pool manager. Already set up in a league? I ask that you set it up a second time over at HK. The more leagues/feedback we get in there the better it will be. Like I said, it’s FREE for this year while it’s in BETA mode so I’m not profiting a penny. I really just want to get this thing right and you can help us do that.

Dobber brought up Zac Rinaldo yesterday – in PIM leagues he’s on my radar. He’s also certifiably insane. Makes Dan Carcillo look like a Lady Byng candidate.

Any early reviews from those of you playing NHL 12?

Long way to go Signed up for the Hockey Knight, but it's a far cry away from handling my league. CBS Commissioner is by far the most flexible and has the best options...with that said, there is room for improvement in a few areas, but I don't think CBS is interested in expanding or updating their hockey site anymore. If Hockey Knight wants to be king...start with CBS' flexibility and ESPN's GUI...then expand from there.

pronger? i wouldn't compare Myers to Pronger at all. how are they similar, other than the height? (and maybe the potential for TOI)

Myers really isn't nasty like Pronger. he's much, much better skater... to the point where he doesn't really have a comparable in the NHL. Bouwmeester, perhaps.

... Will the Myers signing end all of the Doughty nonsense? Myers' contract comes up to $5.5M per (on average) - well below what the Doughty camp seems to be asking for.

Dalpe - 2nd line center? While Dalpe does fit the mould of a second-line gamer, there has been a lot of speculation that he might actually end up on the wing on that line (with Ruutu playing at centre after excelling there last season). Granted it was a limited sample size but Dalp was very weak in the faceoff dot at the NHL level. Unfortunately, I can't find anywhere that shows AHL faceoff percentages. Just some food for thought.

In NHL11 i didn't get into HUT so i am not sure what has/hasn't changed but the package itself is pretty impressive. I have run into similar problems as listed below in terms of freezing.
I started my BAP career last night, won a fight and then the game froze which was disappointing. I also find the game to be sluggish at times. I have had the same Xbox360 for 4.5 years now and it almost seems as though my 360 is too outdated to play this game.
-Menus load slowly in game
-Line change options take a second longer to come up (which usually causes me to pick the wrong line)
-In game strategies are a second delayed
-Overall the game feels unpolished

@chimp - i got the same feeling too that this feels unfinished and almost seems rushed (even though they have the same deadline year in and year out).

RE: Nail Yakupov
I started a CHL BAP with Nail and was dominating, 3g 3a in 2 games, only to realized that those games don't count towards unlocking legends. Honestly, i never realized that he was lacking potential and really don't understand why he wouldn't have the highest potential for undrafted players.

I hope that sooner rather than later an update comes out and smooths everything out.

If you didn't play last year's game, this would be rated through the roof but knowing what NHL11 brought to the table, it certainly leaves something to be desired.

Richards Vid:
He's the West's problem now. Crosby's durability will skyrocket (once he plays again).

Dalpe Hey Jef, you mentioned on Twitter you took Dalpe early in your draft. Care to comment on him either via post, comment or future ramble? He's starting to gain momentum and I have draft coming up. Thx

NHL 12 I personally have experienced the following problem:

1. I stopped receiving EA Pucks in the HUT game mode after about 2800 - extremely frustrating.
2. Every time I win a game in HUT, it tacks a big LOSS onto my record.
3. Nail Yakupov is again listed with no potential (as Chimp stated below) and his size 5'1" couldn't be more wrong. I hope they fix this major flaw with the CHL's best prospect.

I haven't been overly impressed with any of the NEW game features to be honest. The game isn't much different from last years version. MOst people say that every year the game comes out but this is the first time I truly feel as though they haven't did enough.

Doughty Lombardi often gets a lot of bad press but I think its commendable he's sticking to his guns in dealing with Doughty. Its more likely Doughty's agent playing hardball so it will come down to whether Doughty wants to be a part of what the Kings have going this year.
He had a good rookie season, an amazing sophomore season, and ho-hum last year. defenitely not grounds for becoming the highest paid player on the team. They have depth in the system with J.Johnson, Martinez, Voynov that can step in and play the point on the PP, and Stoll can fill that role too. Its not like the Kings would be lost without him (as the Isles would be without Tavares), they're just not elite. Iwouldn't be surprised to see this drag into the seaon given Lombardi's track record.

re: NHL12 Do not buy this game. It looks great but the game is pretty much a beta version. A few of the many reported glitches:

1. The highly-anticipated Game Tracker feature does not work at all for me. You are supposed to be able to watch replays of every significant event in the game. In my game it says "no replay" for every single event.

2. Almost universal game crashes and freezing on both PS3 and X360.

3. My team's PP% has been listed as 300% for the entire season so far (~15 games in).

4. Centres get stuck to the boards near the bench instead of lining up for the faceoff.

5. No pucks are being awarded for the Hockey Ultimate Team feature, rendering it completely useless.

6. Nail Yakupov is rated 70 with no future potential, completely stripping the fun out of Be A GM mode.

NHL 12 Just got NHL 12 here are some thoughts

The new simulation system is cool and useful. New physics system and puck physics system actually affects gameplay quite a bit (mostly positively)
Addition of "skills" for players includes specialties like "one timer expert" or a "hit finisher" add a unique feel to certain star players.

AI is still stupid sometimes, especially on your own team. EA tends to give the CPU a speed advantage etc. to make up for lack of intelligence, can be frustrating.

All in all, a nice improvement from last year. They still need to add some things though, foremost for me would be Game Logs. Why doesn't this game have game logs?
