Chimera USPRESSWIRE

When the Washington Capitals acquired Jason Chimera from the Columbus Blue Jackets during the 2009-10 season, it wasn't a move that turned many heads.  Chimera was always a rough and tumble player that could add some depth to a forward group.  Now one could make the argument that he is the Caps most versatile player and a very key member of the squad.

Last season the left winger from Edmonton, Alberta had a career year offensively to go along with his sandpaper style of play.  He netted 20 goals and 39 points, but his contributions ran much deeper than that for both Washington and poolies.

One telling stat that Chimera posted in 2011-12 was his shots on goal.  It was the first time he hit the 200 shot plateau in his career and he finished second only to Alexander Ovechkin on the Caps.

4 SEMIN, ALEXANDER R WSH 77 183
5 WIDEMAN, DENNIS D WSH 82 176
6 CARLSON, JOHN D WSH 82 152

Now while increasing his shot total played a role in his first 20-goal season, it certainly was also a factor in Chimera scoring in several different ways.  He posted two shorthanded tallies which led the team and also had five game-winning goals.  While the shorthanded goals are all well and good, game-winning snipes can tend to be a little random.  Well, that may not necessarily be the case when it comes to Chimera.  If you consider that of his 118 career goals, 23 are game winners, and he has had four seasons of at least three GWG or more, that seems to be more like a trend than an anomaly.

Although he ramped it up in the offensive department in 2011-12, Chimera didn’t let his physical play suffer in the process.  His 78 PIM were good enough for second on the team behind Matt Hendricks, and he was fourth on the squad with 132 hits.  These are the things the Capitals expected when they traded for Chimera, and all of his scoring production is just gravy.

One area poolies were hoping Chimera would improve upon in 2011-12 was his plus/minus.  As much as we would like to believe that strong defensive play is all the stat reflects, it can’t be denied that the players on the ice around you make a big difference.  In 2010-11 for instance, Chimera was a minus-10.  However, last season he had the benefit of playing most of his time with the defensively responsible Joel Ward who was an offseason pickup from the Predators.  Ward was a plus-12 and helped Chimera raise his rating 14 points to a respectable plus-4.

Chimera produced in many ways last season despite getting very minimal opportunities.  He only averaged 14:26 of ice time per game which ranked 14th on the team, but still finished with the third most goals.  With Alexander “I’m harder to figure out than a Rubik’s Cube” Semin off to Carolina, this should lead to more ice time for Chimera next season.  Not only that, but it may even mean getting an opportunity to play more with Washington’s big guns Alexander Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom.

Overall, when you are evaluating Chimera’s fantasy value, it would be hard to say he does anything great.  It is, however, fair to say that he does many things well due to his versatility.  He may not be a guy you think of early on during your draft, but most of the time your last few picks are the ones that make or break you.  Chimera has made a career out of exceeding expectations, and in 2012-13 he could help your fantasy team do the same.
