The Red Wings have signed Todd Bertuzzi to a one-year deal pending a physical, according to TSN.

Fantasy Impact: If the Jason Williams' signing didn't remove Justin Abdelkader from the roster before, this one will now. Looks like he'll have to wait another year. Ditto for Jeremy Williams, who probably could have been a part-timer otherwise.

There is a chance that Bertuzzi will eat some of the power-play time that Ville Leino was going to get, but I think the youngster will prove himself enough early on to take the PP time right back in the second half. Still, you may want to roll his outlook back a few points. Danny Cleary also stands to lose some PP time.

Bertuzzi probably won't play 70 games in a season again in his career. That puts his upside in the mid to high 50s now, which he could hit in Detroit. It's an ideal situation for him.

... This is the Red Wing way, veteran to eat penalty minutes, deflect shots in front from the skill players and see you in the playoffs. Ie. backup to Holmstrom's role.

I hope Todd has 60 games left in the tank and remains undamaged going into the playoffs. His ability to sustain his health would be the only question of concern imo.

... Being a hockey fan, this is a bad signing.
Being a anti-Red Wing fan, I like this signing.

That is where I am on this signing.

... man i though detroit learned already the last time they had him( and having to give up shawn matthias to get him)that bert is no longer a productive consistent player, any team that signed bertuzzi is an automatic bad signing.

... OMG...why won't this man go away? Detroit of all teams I thought would be smart enough to pass on him. I'm suprised he didn't come to my beloved Leafs.
Detroit usually does such a great job promoting the young guys. I think they have some guys ready to step up, now they stay in the AHL because of Bertuzzi!

... Abdelkader was AHL bound long before Bertuzzi was signed. Holland and company have been saying for a very long time that they want Abdelkader to be the man in Grand Rapids and play 20 minutes a night this year. Leino wasn't getting anything close to 50 points anyway. This was just the nail in the coffin for him. I've been saying 40 tops this year all along and I stand by that. He was a third liner with PP2 time at best all along this year. Detroit doesn't rush guys. I thought that was pretty apparent after all these years.

With that said I hate this signing. Bert is lazy, defensively inept and injury prone, plus it pushes Detroit right up against the cap and that's even if you put Lilja on LTIR. With Lilja, Detrit is over the cap. Completely stupid move.
