"No expansion" says the NHL; "Yeah right" says Dobber; Alfredsson's decision; goalie strategies; and more …

The Fantasy Hockey Guide was last updated again last night - I put in my Top 50 Calder Picks. Find me another fantasy guide out there with Devin Setoguchi in the Calgary lineup with a projection. I dare ya! The Draft List was also updated with Band-Aid Boys, plus/minus and power-play points added.

*

And my Puck Daddy piece yesterday went over some key fantasy hockey goaltenders (and reviews my personal "tier" system that I allude to in my Fantasy Guide)

And Puck Daddy from the day before that checked out the key fantasy hockey defensemen.

The NHL denies that expansion is in the works. They also denied that a lockout wasn't coming, and later they denied that a CBA had been reached. I could go on and on with how they love to spin their fairy tales, but you get the idea. The NHL is expanding and I'm guessing it will be to 34 teams for some strange reason. I think 32 is a good idea, and then keep it there for at least 50 years. Anyway, hockey is growing, the amount of markets reached will grow - and the number of fantasy hockey players and managers will also grow. That's good for DobberHockey and the community here. Let's make some friends in Vegas!

After 12 years and 821 online articles, 25 printed articles - my ties to The Hockey News is coming to an end. When I wrap up this offseason Fantasy Outlook series, that will be it for me there. And in fact - I will post those last two or three articles here in case you don't bother going to THN to check them out. This will allow me to focus on posting content on my own site. Without THN, there would be no DobberHockey - so I owe Jason Kay, Ed Fraser, Brian Costello, Rory Boylen and Adam Proteau a lot. I really appreciate the opportunity and getting to know them over the years.

Michael Russo reports that the New York Rangers have been speaking to Ryan Malone. I'm not sure where he would fit in there but I'm sure Kevin Hayes didn't agree to go there only to be pushed out by over-signing a slew of veterans.

Also in that link is his impression of how good Josh Harding looked out there. I think Harding should be one of the top goalies drafted, even though I have him in the third tier. I really do think that Harding will be a stud to start the season. But will that be for two days, two weeks, or two months? You're definitely rolling the dice, which is why nobody will take him in the first 10 goalies of the draft. But if you can add him as your No.2 goalie, it's a coup. And then just get a goalie who will come on in the second half - like Stalock, Allen, or Khudobin.

*

Speaking of this, I was told on Twitter by "2 Minutes for Hockey" that he was able to draft Stalock, Allen, Khudobin and Jones in the last four rounds. He used the rest of the draft to focus on forwards and defensemen. I found that an interesting strategy. I would be too afraid to do it. But I would try it after adding one proven guy. Then I'd take three late fliers the way he did.

Scott Gomez has been invited to the New Jersey Devils camp on a tryout? Yep. He made some pretty massive dollars since leaving the Devils and now he returns, hat in hand, on a doubtful quest to make the team. No Mogilny to save you now, Scott!

And wait, there's more! How about…Tomas Kaberle to the Devils on a tryout as well? Not official yet, but definitely in discussion.

*

Interesting, from the world of analytics - Hockey Reference now gives career PDO. See Crosby's, here.

*

The Columbus beatwriters over at the Dispatch have been reviewing - player by player - each member of the Blue Jackets' roster and then they finish off the review with a projection. Get the full list of players here. One example - they have Cam Atkinson at 46 points (25 of them goals) and 22 PIM.

*

Ken Holland said Wednesday that any decision from Daniel Alfredsson won't be made until mid-September. So he'll be a hot waiver-wire guy at that point, since a lot of drafts will be done by then. Alfresson will be 42 in December.

Quoting hockeymasters:
Hey Dobber,
Don't you think it's a little unfair to dare people to find another guide out there with Devin Setoguchi in the Calgary lineup when you don't have a print deadline to meet?. Just sayin.

Of course it's unfair - that's my point. I don't have a print deadline to meet. Should I set a print deadline and make my Guide inferior, to make it fair for the other guides? ;)

The tribute should've been on Kaberle fanning on the puck!
That would have been a more apt tribute.

Good to see they got the entire goal production of his career in a short few second clip. Mostly hugging other people for making him look good.

Tomas T.dot will love you for the fact that you were all we seemed to have for a while.

Proof that enough playing time and good line-mates can make everyone look good.

Just saying. For everyone saying Crosby had a bad post season, he was an absolutely dominant possession player who was terribly unlucky.

I do not understand the Devils. Ryan Carter is better than Gomez by a mile, and yet he remains unsigned. Any defenseman is better than Kaberle, even one they have in the ECHL playing 3rd pairing minutes.
Not to mention they have about 15 forwards signed already, with most over 30 and a couple VERY slow. BAH! End Rant

Dobber, where do you get PDO stats from during the season. It seems like it would be a good way to target someone after the first few weeks of the season if they have an unusually low PDO. (I'm unaware if whether or not hockey-referenc e updates their stats regularly during the season.)

Stone - try it now. My developer brought over the testing site to live at 1am so from 1am to 8am it had an older guide. Same thing happened yesterday too (I just caught it later). Hopefully shop upgrades are done today.

I'll be sad you're no longer writing for THN that's where I found out about this site. (though I did somewhat enjoy you not thanking Ken Campbell)

very cool that hockey reference is showing possession stats. Career PDO is neat. much better benchmark to predict a bounce back year.

I'm not seeing the updates in the guide? Is the link in the downloads section incorrect?
